Program Information
League Information
- Ages 18+
- Season: January-February
- Six-week season
- Guaranteed five regular season games
- Four on four play without goalies
- City tournament held for all divisions
- Rink Dimensions:
- 150x75 feet with 18-inch wooden boards
- Goals are six feet wide with two one-foot openings
- Equipment:
- All players must wear helmets and hockey skates
- Protective equipment is optional but highly recommended
- **New 2026** All Skaters MUST wear a helmet during play
- Helmets do NOT have to be hockey helmets (i.e. bike or ski/snowboard helmets are acceptable)
Season Information
- Winter: January- February
- Team Registration Fee: $290 (six games scheduled, five games guaranteed)
- Individual Skater Registration Fee: $40
Divisions
- Co-Ed: Teams must have at least one female player on at any given time, with a maximum of two male players at any given time
- Open: No restrictions on gender representation in lineup
Skill Levels
- Recreational: Majority of players are newer to hockey or have not played at a competitive level; players with higher experienced focused on social play
- Competitive: Majority of players have high school level or higher experience
League Games and Times
- Game dates and times will be posted on the league schedule at least one week before the league's scheduled start date.
- Weeknight game times will be at 6, 7, 8, and 9pm
- Postponements: All games will be played as scheduled
- Postponements will be considered because of excessive snowfall or extremely poor ice
- Postponed games may be made up on weekends
- Games will be called by 4pm on game days

MPRB League Rules
General Sports Guidelines

Uniforms
- Teams must have some form of distinguishing marking such as jerseys, jackets, pinnies, etc.
- Teams must have a dark and a light option (we recommend having a dark/light alternate pinnie) in case of having the same color as opponents
- **New 2026** All Skaters MUST wear a helmet during play
- Helmets do NOT have to be hockey helmets (i.e.. bike or ski/snowboard helmets are acceptable)
Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) House Rules
- The winner of the captain's coin toss will determine which goal to defend
- Teams will switch sides at half (unless otherwise agreed upon by both teams and the official)
- No goalie equipment or goalie sticks allowed
- All teams must have matching dark and light jerseys
- There will be one ice official to monitor play (scoring, time, puck resent, and infractions)
- Penalties will be called for infractions
- Penalties called by the official are final
- A minor penalty will result in a goal and possession of the puck
- A major penalty includes any action that could possibly injure another player
- A major penalty will result in ejection from the game and and the offending team playing the remainder of the game shorthanded (3-4)
- The league director will follow-up on major penalties to determine if suspension is necessary
- Abuse of officials counts as a major penalty (this includes yelling, swearing, and/or excessive arguing over calls)
- No checking: checking can be called as either a minor or major penalty depending on the official's judgement
- No slap-shots: slap-shots will result in a minor penalty
- Players cannot fall or lay on the ice in an effort to protect the goal area
- This will result in minor penalty
- Goaltending is not allowed
- A player may not patrol or "camp out" or remain stationary in the crease to act as a goaltender
- A defender may deflect the puck in the crease area but must do so while continuing to move through the crease area
- The crease is defined as an imaginary box extending four feet out from the outside corners of the goal
- Contacting the puck with the stick above the waist will result in a loss of possession
- Raising the puck above the waist will result in a loss of possession
- After an out of bounds puck, the defender must give their opponent at least two-stick lengths of space
- There is no offsides or icing
- Goals must be scored from the attacking side of center ice
- Referees will call out the score after each goal
- Teams must give their opponents at least half of the ice after a goal is scored or an infraction takes place
- Games will be comprised of two 25-minute halves and a five-minute halftime
- All games are running-time
- Substitutions can be made on the fly or while the puck is being retrieved
- There is no time stoppage after a goal is scored or a penalty is issued
